As a mother, a nurse, an educator, and a patient, I’ve learned how much people struggle to understand what health is. Become The Whole Healthy You! stood out to me because it makes healthy lifestyle choices clear, doable, and realistic. The concepts are thorough, yet basic, for adolescents and adults. The content is not overwhelming nor out of reach. I am learning that, in all of my roles, consistency is the key.

The book builds naturally, each concept supports the next, and the result is balanced information. The focus on sleep, movement, thoughts, nutrition, and community is explained in a way that can be implemented in everyday life.

The Teacher Guide carries that same strength. It breaks things down into steps that are easy to teach and easy for students to understand. The activities are thoughtful and engaging — the ‘Chronic Inflammation City’ simulation is a very good hands-on activity that turns a complicated construct into something students can grasp. The guide is organized, practical, and something I see being used effectively in a classroom or homeschool environment. This preteen/teen curriculum could serve young adults in college as well.

The curriculum presents the body as connected systems. Students learn how sleep, movement, nutrition, and community all work together. It’s the kind of understanding that will stay with you and help you make better choices throughout your life. I endorse this book and teacher guide for teens and young adults. For any parent, or educator, who wants a clear and achievable approach to teaching healthy living, this curriculum is for you.

Become the Whole Healthy You! by Stephanie Lowery and Gemma Carson makes me think about the principles we need to teach our children. We need to realize that they are not too young to understand the important, and crucial, decisions in their thoughts and actions. This includes inaction. Even the conversations they have affect their health. I highly recommend this as a curriculum because it states in a simplistic style, utilizing hands-on activities, that the health choices they make will follow them through their lives.

We must expect our young adult children to understand nutrition at a higher level with serious learning. This is what this book does. Not only does it go into the many body systems and how they systematically work together, it emphasizes when one of these systems is out of balance, the rest of the body is out of balance too. Furthermore, it heavily stresses the condition of inflammation which causes our systems to be off-kilter. In my opinion, it is important to understand inflammation in the younger and formative years. It repeatedly demonstrates that the choices we make daily as a youth develop us to a healthy adult or an unhealthy adult.

Become the Whole Healthy You! emphasizes every food choice we make, every word we speak, thought we think, physical motion we make or choose not to make, along with the importance of sleep, affects how we will further grow into a healthy and happy adult. The message of the book is to start now. The opportunity to journal and the visual illustrations make it appealing for a teenager to really understand that their health is up to them. It is a refreshing and interesting read for a teenager without the feel of a textbook.
