Sleep Component
The below topics are covered in the sleep portion of the health class. Along with learning how much sleep is needed, students learn about these three topics associated with sleep health. If these are topics that you are not familiar with, ask your student what he is learning in Become The Whole Healthy You!
Balancing Body Systems
It's important to get a consistent number of hours of sleep each night. It is an unhealthy habit to "catch up on sleep" on weekends. Students learn about the chemical messengers of hormones and neurotransmitters. It is healthy to develop good sleep habits early in life.
Resetting Bodily Functions
Students learn about the autonomic nervous system. Learning about uptraining parasympathetics is important for our overall health and settles us into a good night's sleep.
Cleaning Out The Brain and Body
Sleep is a very busy time in the brain. There is a lot going on that we may not be aware of. This is why getting good sleep is so important to being the whole healthy you!
Family Discussion Questions
- What are some things we could do as a family to ensure we each get the number of hours of sleep we each need, and that same number of hours of sleep every night, weekdays and weekends?
- What is a healthy way we can let each other know if one of us seems grumpy, or in a bad mood? How can we help each other get in a better mood?
- Can we do things as a family to create a better sleeping environment for each person in the family?
- How can we as a family participate in uptraining parasympathetics together?
- When can we perform uptraining parasympathetics on our own?
